Pap Smear in Barcelona
Pap smear (Pap test) in Barcelona for early detection of abnormalities and to support your intimate health.
What Exactly Is a Pap Smear (Pap Test)?
Its main goal is to detect possible cellular abnormalities early, such as precancerous or cancerous lesions, which—if left untreated—could progress to more serious problems.
At Clínica Sants, we use liquid-based cytology, a modern technique that improves sample quality and allows additional tests, such as HPV, if needed.
Getting a Pap smear regularly is one of the most important preventive care steps to:
Early Detection of Cervical Cancer
This is its most crucial role. It helps identify abnormal cells long before they become cancer.
Identification of HPV Infection
It can detect cellular changes suggestive of the Human Papillomavirus, the main cause of cervical cancer.
Peace of Mind and Control Over Your Health
Knowing you keep up with your regular gynecology check-ups and that everything is fine provides real peace of mind.
Pap Smear Step By Step
01
Preparation
We recommend avoiding vaginal treatments, douching, and sexual intercourse for 24–48 hours before the test.
02
Sample Collection
Your specialist will insert a speculum to view the cervix and, using a small spatula and a special brush, collect cells from the area.
03
Analysis And Results
The sample is sent to the lab for analysis. Results are usually available within a few days and will be reviewed with you by your gynecologist.
Screening programs based on Pap smears can reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality by up to 80%.
Possible Pap Smear Results And Next Steps
Normal / Negative for Lesion
No abnormal cells were found. You should continue routine screening—every 3 years between ages 25 and 34, and every 5 years from age 35 onward if combined with HPV testing.
Abnormal (ASC-US, LSIL, HSIL)
If your result shows changes, the first thing is to stay calm. In the vast majority of cases, it’s not something serious.
It simply means we’ve detected something that should be monitored or evaluated more closely. We’ll explain everything and support you every step of the way.
Pap Smear and HPV Test in Barcelona: Are They the Same?
No, the two tests are different, but they complement each other:
Pap smear: Looks for abnormal cells (the effect).
HPV test: Detects the presence of the virus (the cause).
In many current guidelines, especially for women aged 30-35 and older, “cotesting” (doing both tests at the same time) is recommended, which increases sensitivity and makes it possible to space out check-ups further if both results are negative.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pap Smears
How often should I get a Pap smear?
Does an “abnormal” Pap smear result mean I have cancer?
It’s normal to have questions about gynecological Pap smears and how often you should have one to take care of your intimate health.
You can visit our Frequently Asked Questions section for guidance, but remember you can always contact us if you need a clearer or more personalised explanation.
If my Pap smear is normal, does that mean I don’t have HPV?
Not necessarily. A Pap smear detects changes in cervical cells, while an HPV test specifically detects the presence of the virus.
It’s possible to have an active HPV infection without visible cell changes yet.
For this reason, from around ages 30–35 onward, many guidelines recommend doing both tests together (cotesting) for added reassurance.
