FAQ

2. Gynecological examinations

From Sants Gynecological Clinic, we recommend you to do an annual periodic review to follow a correct gynecological control:

Basic Gynecological Visit includes:

  • Visit with a gynecologist
  • General and gynecological exploration
  • Gynecological ultrasound

Depending on the case and according to the criteria of the gynecologist, additional tests will be indicated or performed to define the diagnosis and its treatment. Check the price list.

For other specific tests such as X-rays, scanners, resonances we have concerted centers. Check the price list.

3. Gynecological citology: early detection of cervical cancer

Vaginal cytology is performed at Sants Gynecological Clinic as part of a gynecological examination.

A. What is it?

Cervical cytology also called Pap smears (Pap test) is a test used to detect cell alterations in the cervix early, serves to give information of the hormonal profile according to the stage of the menstrual cycle of the woman and also to determine the presence of some microorganisms that have produced a qualitative and quantitative imbalance in the vaginal flora.

B. What is it?

It consists of inserting a speculus into the vagina and separating the walls to visualize the cervix. It is carried out using the technique of the triple sampleThe first sample is taken from the vaginal walls or vaginal exudate at the back of the vagina. The second is taken from the exoemic that is the outer part of the cervix. The third one is taken from the endocephalic site, which is the part corresponding to the canal of the cervix, which communicates the inside of the uterine cavity with the vagina. The shots taken are deposited on what is called a slide that will be observed under the microscope to be able to see the cells and make a diagnosis.

C. Is it painful?

Apart from the discomfort of the speculum, this test does not share any risk or pain.

D. When is it done?

It should preferably be done during the first phase of the menstrual cycle (3 or 4 days after the end of your period). In addition, it is recommended to:

  • Sexual abstinence the last 48 hours,
  • Wash externally with soap and water, do NOT do internal washing or apply vaginal deodorants.
  • NOT using topical treatments within 5-7 days before testing (eggs, spermicides, vaginal creams).

4. Cultivation of vaginal discharge

A. What is it?

It is a laboratory technique which, based on a sample of vaginal secretion, evaluate the proliferation of germ growth in the adequate conditions.

It is very important to determine these studies in order to choose the right treatment to any pathology.

B. How is it done?

It consists in inserting a speculum into the vagina and drag with a cotton swab or gauze part of the vaginal discharge and send it to a lab to determine which bacteria, fungus or other microorganisms are present in the vagina and also allows to check the pH of the liquid, i.e. whether it is acidic or basic.

C. Is it painful?

The method can be unpleasant but not painful.

D. When is it done?

It should be done whenever the woman notices the presence of abnormal flows in terms of changes in quantity, consistency, color and smell. It should also be done when you have any signs of irritation, itching and pain in external genitalia linked to vaginal flows.

5. HPV Vaccine: prevention of cervical cancer

A. What is it?

HPV is a virus that is transmitted through genital contact (such as vaginal or anal sex). HPV can affect men’s genitals (penis and anus) and women’s (cervix, vagina, and anus).

B. Who should be vaccinated with these vaccines?

Anyone with genital contact with another person can develop genital HPV. Both men and women can contract it and pass it on without knowing it. Because the virus can remain dormant for a long time, a person may be infected with genital HPV even years after sexual contact.

Studies show that genital HPV is transmitted by:

Genital contact with a person who has genital HPV infection, including:

  • Vaginal sex with a person who has genital HPV infection
  • Anal sex with a person who has genital HPV infection

NO study shows that genital HPV is spread by:

  • Toilet seats
  • Mouth kissing, hugging someone or holding hands
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Sharing food or utensils
  • Swimming pools, Jacuzzis, etc.

C. Tetravalent HPV vaccine

This vaccine has been indicated for use in women from 9 years old.

This vaccine prevents the occurrence of:

  • Precancerous lesions and cervical, vulvar, vaginal and anal cancers, caused by HPV oncogenic types included in the vaccine (HPV 16 and HPV 18).
  • Genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11.

It does not contain genetic material, therefore it cannot cause disease.

It can be given to children aged 9 to 15 years and women aged 16 to 26.

If you are thinking of getting HPV vaccinated at Sants Gynecological Clinic, please contact us, and we will provide you with more information about the procedure to be followed to administer the vaccine and other questions you may have.
