Hydrocele Surgery in Barcelona
Hydrocele has a solution: safe, fast surgery at our clinic in Barcelona.
What Exactly is a Hydrocele and Why Does it Occur?
Put simply, a hydrocele is a build-up of fluid around one of the testicles, inside the scrotum.
Imagine the testicle has a thin layer around it; sometimes, between that layer and the testicle, a small pocket of fluid forms.
Is Having a Hydrocele Dangerous?
No, a hydrocele is not a serious condition and is usually not painful.
The main downside is the feeling of heaviness, the discomfort from the increased size, or simply the cosmetic concern.
Although it doesn’t usually affect fertility, if the hydrocele is very large, it can become uncomfortable for walking or in your day-to-day life. That’s why a hydrocelectomy is the definitive solution.

Hydrocele Surgery Step By Step
01 Initial Consultation
During your appointment, a specialist urologist will assess your hydrocele, calmly explain the procedure, and answer any questions you bring.
02 Procedure
We’ll welcome you to the clinic and get you ready for the procedure. After sedation, our surgeon will carry out the treatment.
03 Recovery
After surgery, you’ll spend some time in our recovery area. When you’re ready, we’ll discharge you with very clear instructions on how to care for yourself at home.
Hydrocele Surgery: Outpatient and Pain-Free
Technique
A small incision is made in the scrotum to drain all accumulated fluid.
Then we remove the “pocket” that produced it, to help ensure it doesn’t come back.
Pain and Recovery
You won’t feel anything during the procedure.
It’s performed with light sedation so you’re fully asleep and relaxed, with an anesthesiologist monitoring you at all times.
Outpatient Treatment
This is an outpatient procedure.
You come to the clinic, we perform the surgery, and after a short rest in our recovery room, you go home the same day.
Recovery After Hydrocele Surgery
What To Expect
Recovery is usually quick and uncomplicated.
In most cases, patients can return to their routine within a few days, since it’s a straightforward procedure with a well-tolerated recovery period.
However, it’s normal for the area to be slightly swollen during the first few days.
Swelling and mild discomfort are part of healing and typically improve gradually with rest and the prescribed medication.
Relative Rest
We recommend taking it easy for 3 to 7 days and avoiding any strenuous physical activity.
Discomfort Level
Discomfort is usually mild and is well controlled with the pain relievers we prescribe.
Stitches
We use dissolvable sutures that fall out on their own within 7–10 days, with no need for removal.
Sexual Activity
We’ll advise waiting at least a couple of weeks before resuming any sexual activity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hydrocele Surgery
Does hydrocele surgery affect fertility or sexual function?
Can an untreated hydrocele cause serious complications?
Can a hydrocele come back after surgery?
It’s normal to have questions about hydrocele, when surgery is necessary, or what the recovery process is like after the operation.
You can consult our Frequently Asked Questions section for guidance, but remember you can always contact us if you need a clearer explanation or a personalized assessment.
Is surgery always necessary for a hydrocele?
Not always. If the hydrocele is small and doesn’t cause discomfort, periodic monitoring may be enough.
However, when it grows, causes physical or cosmetic discomfort, surgery is the only definitive treatment.
Aspiration (draining the fluid with a needle) isn’t effective long-term, since the fluid often returns.
